Big screen tv. Bigger vs. Smaller/ 1080 vs. 720/ plasma vs lcd.?
Ok. My wife and I have never bought a tv other than the old fish bowl types. Now, we are venturing out to get a flat screen. There are a few options out there. I've been told by many people that 1080 is way better than 720 and that plasma is better than LCD. I've got to tell you, I really cant tell too big a diff when I go to the store and see them all right next to each other. I mean, I see a 52 inch 720 for $900, then I see a 46 inch 1080 for $1300. I mean, wheres the biggest bang for my buck? Do I stick with the 720 and just look for the biggest size that could be many inches larger than a comparably priced 1080p? Any suggestions?
Our living room is very dark and we would be sitting 10 to 15 feet away from the tv. Also, maybe a xbox 360 game or two if im lucky.
First, for 10'-15', you really need at least a 50" screen!
Second, 720p v. 1080p: The only source of 1080p is a 1080p BRD! If you have a Blu-ray player and watch a lot of BRDs, it is worth going 1080p on a 50" or larger screen. If not, the extra $$$ is questionable and you'll most likely be well satisfied with a 720p.
Your first answer says plasma is a dead technology. The only thing 'dead' is his brain! Unless you do a whole bunch of gaming - and leave static images on for extended times - plasma will give you the very best picture - both contrast and response times are far superior to LCD.
Dollar-for-dollar, the very best plasma display in BOTH performance and reliability, not to mention after sale availability of parts and service, is the Panasonic Viera - bar none! Put "panasonic plasma tv" in your browser and you'll get many hits on sites to compare prices and specs.
Should you want an LCD, the very best, again in both performance and reliability, is the Sony Bravia. Look at the 52" and larger screens. Second in that size is probably a toss up between Toshiba Regza and Sharp Aquos - both good quality LCDs.
BTW, I have a 50" Panasonic 720p/1080i and it is great with up-converted DVDs and spectacular with cable HD programming at 10'.
